The Reed Knot of Inanna

The Reed Knot of Inanna

£40.00

‘The Reed Knot of Inanna’ is one of the oldest sacred symbols of ancient Mesopotamia, associated with the Goddess Inanna as an emblem of fertility, sovereignty, creation, and transformation.

The Knot of Inanna, formed from bundles of sacred marsh reeds, was one of the earliest symbols associated with the Sumerian goddess Inanna and the temple culture of ancient Uruk. Representing a threshold between the earthly and divine realms, the reed knot symbolised fertility, protection, abundance, and the generative power of life itself. In the reed-filled marshlands of Mesopotamia, reeds were essential for shelter, boats, shrines, and daily survival, making them sacred symbols of sustenance and creation.

The looping form of the knot was also understood as a symbolic gateway or divine birth canal — a passage of initiation through which transformation, rebirth, and spiritual renewal unfold. Positioned at temple entrances and sacred storehouses, the symbol embodied Inanna’s role as guardian of abundance and mediator between nature, civilisation, and the unseen realms.

In contemporary symbolic interpretation, Inanna’s Knot can also be seen as representing the weaving together of spirit and matter, the feminine mysteries of creation, and the soul’s journey through cycles of descent, transformation, and renewal.

Symbolism: Thresholds, fertility, divine protection, abundance, rebirth, initiation, and sacred feminine transformation.
