Teresa Dawkes - Age 61
When you came to the workshop what inspired you to come and take part?
I saw a leaflet in town and my interest was piqued. I’m at a time in my life where I feel I can and want to explore new ideas and ways of being. This was completely out of my comfort zone but I’m learning to embrace the uncomfortable and not worry about “failing”
What did you receive, get to understand or learn about yourself and your body from creating your art on the I Am Woman day?
The process of creating my piece was totally absorbing. It made me consider the power within me and how amazing my body is for getting me to the age of 60 relatively trouble free. I’m lucky as I feel I’ve not been too influenced by external factors on body image. I have for the past 30 years worked within the field of women’s health so have seen many, many real women’s bodies but appreciate that many women and girls have a warped view of how they think their body should look which I find so sad. Instead of celebrating their bodies they punish them.
Working alongside women and girls on the day of the workshop was inspiring and joyful There were many shared stories and a supportive atmosphere which encouraged open discussion and a chance to explore new ideas.
What does it mean to you to have a female body in our modern day world?
I’m in total awe of the power of our bodies to heal, grow children and age so beautifully. All stages of a woman’s life and growth should be celebrated. I’m so happy to see menopause being talked about but still feel it can be seen as a negative experience . It is time for the wisdom of the older women to be cherished.
How do you feel about your body today?
I am happy and at ease within my own body. I get a little frustrated at times when I can’t do what I think I should be able to though! At times like these I remind myself how lucky I am to be a woman today.
